Short Bio – Professional
Prof. dr. Frederik Questier teaches courses about educational technology and e-learning at the Teacher Training and Educational Sciences departments of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His main fields of interest are (educational) technologies, innovation and Free & Open Source Software. He is author, editor and reviewer of several books and articles on these subjects and is often invited for workshops and conferences. He is co-founder and Research & Innovation Director of Chamilo, an association which aims at bringing you the best Free and Open Source e-learning and collaboration platform. He contributes as a consultant to ICT in education projects for universities in developing countries such as Kenya and Cuba. Till the end of 2009 he was head of an expertise center in his university, focusing on the educational training of academic staff, educational innovation and the use of ICT in education.

Frederik Questier was born in Oostende and is now living in Brussels, Belgium. Frederik started programming computers in 1985 and is an Internet and Unix adept since 1993. Four years later he started using and administrating Linux servers and he became a Free Software and Open Source advocate, much concerned with the ethical and social implications of restrictive software licences and digital rights management.
Frederik received a degree in pharmaceutical sciences in 1996 and a PhD in 2005, both at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels – VUB). His PhD thesis was entiteld “Contributions to Clustering and Feature Selection Methods for Clustering”. During his PhD study in the field of chemometrics, cheminformatics and data-mining at the VUB Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, he was inventing and programming new cheminformatic algorithms and administrating a SUN calculation server. At the same time he was a teaching assistant (analytical chemistry and food sciences), in a team which was eagerly implementing new trends in education.
From 2003 till 2007 he worked as an educational technology expert at the VUB Onderwijsvernieuwing en Onderwijs Service Centrum (Educational Innovation and Service Center – OSC). The OSC was an expertise center focusing on educational innovation and the use of ICT for education. The OSC was training and supporting university teaching staff in the use of new pedagogical and technological tools. The OSC also developed, implemented and supported the central educational E-learning systems.
From 2008 till january 2010 he was head of the Educational Innovation & Educational Service Center (OSC) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Since 2007 he is professor (lecturer) for courses about Educational Technology and e-learning at the Teacher Training programme and Educational Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Frederik is an expert in e-learning and e-portfolios, focusing on Open Learning, Open (Course) Content, and Free & Open Software. He is author, editor and reviewer of several scientific & educational articles and books. He is often invited to give talks at (international) conferences.
As for hobbies, he was and still is president of several student and alumni organisations. He collects Unix computers, likes cultural travels and is fascinated by gothic music and arts.
